Hello people.
I just started doing editing on FCP 7 to practice. I have a file that I editted which came out to be 3.5 gb worth. How do i export and compress into small file so that i can upload to vimeo or youtube...and what file do i need to have in anyway? Thanks.

Export the file using "Currrent Settings" and "make self contained" (do not use Quicktime Conversion)
Open up Compressor, drag in your file and chose a preset for one of the Apple Devices - the apple TV one will create a 1080x720 5 mbps file that will work very nicely with Vimeo, Youtube, etc.
If the file is too big, reduce the bitrate. If it looks lousy, increase the bitrate.
Recognize that anything you throw up on the web will be recompressed again.

Go to the menu File > Export > QuickTime Movie . . . and when the Export pane opens, make sure Setting: is set to Current Settings, and Make Movie Self-Contained is checked:

Hi..thx for reply..when I exported...and using compression...i realized the file became fragmented at times...wonder why it was like that...could you explain? thanks.
Are you exporting to a disk that is formatted Mac OS?
If you are exporting to a disk that is formatted MS-DOS, then there is a 2gig limit on file sizes and the file will be divided into sections.

yes, it's mac os format. However... i think it was framented when i tried to do fade in and out (manually) I think it had something to do with the seconds of fading....
Do you mean you only export sections of your sequence?
If you have an in or out point (or both) on the timeline, you will only export that section of the timeline.
To export the whole timeline, make sure you have removed your in and out points - or set the in point at the start of the timeline and the outpoint at the end of the timeline.

Here's my situation: i did cut out to specific time...basically from the beginning (0:00) to certain time (48 minutes..or so)...anyhow... since i had trouble using transition mode to fade in and out...i manually placed dots to do fade in and out. I noticed something here....it seems that when i fade in and out quick...it tends to frament the the fade in and out scene... I did compare with my last export and current...and noticed that it was less fragmented when i fade in and out with more seconds (meaning 3-5 seconds of fading) rather than quick fade (1 second or less).
Click on one of your camera source clips in the FCP Browser, and once selected, type Command + 9 to see the item properties for the source clip. Either report those properties, or take a screen shot of the item properties and post that here.
Next, click anywhere in your timeline and type Command + 0 {zero} to see your sequence settings. Either report those sequence settings here or take a screen shot of the sequence settings and post that screen shot here.
